Alicia, Jill, Todd and Russell proudly joined 39 other emergency service members by being presented their Certificate in Emergency Management at the 2nd Annual Tai Poutini Polytechnic Emergency Management Graduation held in Palmerston North this weekend.
In addition to graduating, Todd was also nominated for EMANZ Student of the Year, which was eventually awarded to Mike Langford from the Taranaki Regional Council.
The Certificate Programme is hosted by the polytechnic but delivered by the Emergency Management Academy of New Zealand (EMANZ).
EMANZ is recognised as the industry leader in emergency management training and was responsible for reporting to NZQA, 57% of all the operational CDEM unit standards last year. The next closest provider only reported 4%.
“Wellington SPCA is very grateful to EMANZ for all of their support,” said ARU Rescue Manager Blair Hillyard. “Our sincere thanks goes to the very professional and dedicated staff at EMANZ for all their encouragement and assistance.”
The Honourable Simon Power, MP for Rangitikei, opened the graduation and Mr John Hamilton, Director of the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management provided the keynote speech.
The Certificate is offered as a Level 2 or Level 4 qualification and is a mixture of NZQA Unit Standards and Polytechnic Units.
Having now obtained their Level Two qualification, Alicia, Jill, Todd and Russell will now start work towards obtaining their Level Four qualification, which Blair and Sam gained last year.
“Qualifications such as these are critically important to the ARU as they reflect the professionalism and capability of our crew,” said ARU Training Officer Sam Hughes. “They are also a great way of rewarding our crew for all the countless hours that they dedicate to helping Wellington SPCA.”
